Hereford United - Bulls Online

HYDE UNITED (home - FA Trophy) 07/02/05

Hereford safely progressed to the next round of the FA Trophy following a fairly comfortable victory over Northern League side Hyde United. All the goals came in the second half, as the Bulls' superior fitness told.

Hyde had a game plan to frustrate their higher-graded opponents, and defended in depth for much of the first half. Although Hereford passed the ball around well on a terrible pitch and looked threatening, visiting goalkeeper Tim Mullock only had one real save to make, when he did well to parry away a fierce drive by Craig Stanley.

Stanley in fact had many of the chances that came the way of the home side, but he sliced two shots over and had a free header miss the target. He should probably have scored with the header following an excellent cross by Danny Williams.

Having done so well to repel Hereford in the first half, Hyde fell behind just three minutes into the second period. A corner was only half cleared to Rob Purdie on the edge of the penalty area, and Mullock made a complete hash of Purdie's low cross, as it crept in at the near post. Tamika Mkandawire claimed the final touch however.

Home keeper Craig Mawson, who apart from just reaching a poor backpass from Tony James before an opponent had had very little to do in the first half, was called upon to make a couple of smart saves. One from Neil Tolson was particularly impressive, as the ball took a deflection and Mawson did well to readjust his body position.

However, Hereford were still very much in control, with the pace of the midfield especially causing lots of problems. The two Dannys, Williams and Carey-Bertram, were both impressive with their passing, and on the other flank Joe Anyinsah caught the eye with his pace.

It was Carey-Bertram who scored the second goal to put the game out of Hyde's reach. The ball broke to Jamie Pitman after Anyinsah had been tackled, and the midfielder played an intelligent ball out to Simon Travis on the right wing. Travis's cross was superb, and Carey-Bertram had an easy task to nod the ball home at the back post to continue with his recent good form in front of goal.

Shortly afterwards, Williams came close to scoring what would have been a goal of the season contender. Purdie ran past a couple of defenders before crossing for Williams, whose outside-of-the-boot volley struck the crossbar. Later on in the game, Purdie got the third goal that confirmed Hereford's place in the next round. Mullock made a sharp stop to keep out Purdie's initial effort, and the tenacity of Pitman ensured that the ball stayed in play. He played the ball back into Purdie's path, and he made no mistake from six yards.

This was a professional performance from United, and there were several good performances. Williams and Carey-Bertram linked up well, and Anyinsah was fouled so many times as his trickery was too much for the Hyde defenders to handle. Mawson did not have a lot to do in goal thanks to good defending from Mkandawire Ð as ever Ð and James.

Team and ratings: Mawson (7), Travis (7) (sub Green (4), James (7), Mkandawire (8), Robinson (6), Anyinsah (8), Pitman (7), Stanley (7), Williams (8) (sub Hyde (3), Carey-Bertram (8) (sub Brown (3), Purdie (7). Subs not used: Smith, Scott.
