YEOVIL (home) 14/01/03 Holders Yeovil Town cruised through to the next round of the FA Trophy after an easy win at Edgar Street. Despite late pressure from the home side, the result was never really in doubt and Yeovil fully deserved their fourth-round clash with Morecambe. Two former Hereford players were included in the Yeovil line-up, with both Gavin Williams and Michael McIndoe lining up in midfield. United made the worst possible start and found themselves two goals down with barely five minutes played. Straight from the kick-off, Kirk Jackson strode forward and won a corner from Tony James' deflection. From the resulting flag-kick, Colin Pluck rose completely unchallenged to give the visitors the lead. Worse was to follow minutes later. Kirk Jackson, who looked suspiciously offside, received the ball and hit a shot against the post. Full-back Adam Lockwood picked up the loose ball and lashed it home past the stranded Baker for a two-goal advantage. Hereford pushed forward straight away, and Andy Tretton received an extremely harsh yellow card for challenging Yeovil goalkeeper Chris Weale. However, Yeovil were still the superior team, and Jamie Pitman had to clear off the line after Baker had flapped at a corner. The Bulls could not find a way through the Yeovil defence until the twentieth minute. John Grant released Danny Williams on the right, and his perfect cross met the head of Ben Smith, who planted the ball into the bottom corner. It was his fifth goal of the season - against one of his former clubs. The trusty left boot of Michael Rose always threatened to cause problems, and Weale did well to hold onto one of his trademark powerful free-kicks. Two more shots from Rose flashed over, but that seemed to be the extent of Hereford's fightback in the first half. At the other end, Gavin Williams shot into the side netting having worked his way past Richard Teesdale. A couple of other chances went begging, and the score at half-time was 2-1. Yeovil continued where they had left off, and Matt Baker was forced into a fine save from Andy Lindegaard's close-range effort. Glovers' skipper McIndoe also sent a couple of hopeful long-range shots over the bar. For the first twenty or so minutes of the second half, Yeovil dominated. Hereford struggled to string two passes together, although every single header and 50/50 challenge was won by a Yeovil player. Hereford did put Yeovil under some pressure towards the end, but nothing too serious resulted. Ben Smith was fed after a good run by Michael Rose, but Lockwood made an excellent sliding challenge. In injury time, United were denied two possible spot-kicks. Substitute Michael Husbands was fouled by Lockwood, and when the ball was returned to the middle, a defender appeared to handle the ball. Although it is never good to lose to your local rivals, it was more than deserved. Hereford were a poor side and struggled to find a colleague with a pass for the entire ninety minutes. Michael Rose and perhaps Danny Williams were the only two players to gain any credit from the match. However, Yeovil were by far the best team to visit Edgar Street this season. They were swift on the counter attack, and their midfield won every single 50/50 ball. Their best player was probably McIndoe, who made good attacking runs, had a few shots at goal, and even got back to help out the defence. Hereford: Baker, Teesdale, James, Tretton, Rose, Pitman, Smith, Williams (sub Husbands), Parry, Grant (sub Purdie), Guinan. Subs not used: Griffiths, Sawyers, Wright.
